British pianist and composer Benjamin Cook masterfully blends modern classical music with the nuanced influences of Max Richter, Ludovico Einaudi, and the timeless legacy of Frédéric Chopin.
In 2022, Cook made a bold entry into the music scene with his debut single, Blossom. Since then, he has captivated audiences worldwide, garnering over 500,000 streams and earning acclaim for his collaborations with the Northern Film Orchestra.
A versatile composer, Cook has worked on feature films, short films, and advertisements, with credits including BBC One, Channel 4, Channel 5, Amazon Prime, and Tubi.
Cook’s reputation soared in 2024 when Scala Radio named him a “One to Watch” composer, while BBC Music Introducing described his work as “Utterly Divine.” That same year, he performed at London’s prestigious Southbank Centre and Sofar Sounds in Piccadilly Circus.
Looking ahead, Cook is set to release his first EP of original compositions for piano and strings, further solidifying his place as a distinctive voice in modern classical music.
1. When and how did you realise that your whole life would be linked to music?
Music has always been a significant part of my life, but the moment of realisation came when I was 17 and deciding on my path after school. It was then that I truly understood music was my calling. It felt like the one thing I was not only passionate about but also genuinely good at—something I could dedicate my life to.
2. Which composer has most influenced your musical imagination?
I can’t choose just one, as two composers have profoundly shaped my musical journey. Max Richter’s music resonates with me on an emotional level that’s hard to put into words, especially his string quartet pieces, which I find incredibly moving. From a film music perspective, John Williams has been an unparalleled influence. His work has redefined what film scores can achieve, and his ability to craft music that stands on its own, even without the visuals, is a testament to his extraordinary talent.
3. What is your main creative motto?
“Do not compare yourself to others.” Everyone is on their own unique musical journey, and in today’s world, it’s all too easy to doubt yourself by looking at others. Staying true to your path is vital, even if it’s easier said than done. It’s a principle I try to hold onto in my career, and I think it’s something all musicians can benefit from embracing.
4. What would you like to express during your performance at the festival? What will your program consist of, and why this choice?
My program will feature both released and unreleased material, carefully chosen to showcase contrasting musical pieces. This contrast is deliberate—I want to take the audience on a varied and dynamic journey through my work. My primary goal is to present myself authentically as a composer and bring each piece to life in a way that deeply connects with the audience.
5. What goals do you set for yourself, and what projects do you have on the horizon?
My biggest project this year is the release of my debut EP, which I’m incredibly excited about. It will feature piano and string pieces recorded live in early 2024, in collaboration with the Northern Film Orchestra, with whom I’ve built a strong creative relationship. Another key goal is to perform more often, as I believe live performances are the best way to truly connect with audiences and bring my music to life.
6. How do you see the future of piano music?
I believe piano music continues to grow in popularity year after year, thanks to its constant evolution. The genre adapts to new influences and innovations while retaining its timeless essence, making it more relevant than ever. I’m optimistic about its future and excited to see how it continues to develop.
7. What does Paris represent for you? Do you have a special relationship with this city, and why did you accept the invitation to participate in the festival?
I have been to France plenty of times but have I have never been to Paris! I have always wanted to come and when I saw the PianoRevenge Festival was happening in this wonderful city I knew I had to be a part of it.
