Lasse HEMSING is a German piano player from Hamburg who began releasing his own music on Piano Day in 2022. After finishing school, he studied at the Hamburg School Music and is currently pursuing his Bachelor’s degree in musicology. In May 2024, he released his first solo album called in colour (via @23BIT_Music).

HEMSING enjoys composing and drawing inspiration from various music genres. With his solo work, he successfully navigates a seamless blend of contemporary neoclassic and experimental ambience music. Jazz and Pop/Rock also play a significant role in his music, especially in live performances. As a keyboardist and pianist, HEMSING regularly performs with different groups, such as his Jazz Trio @nujazzavenue and collaboration with singers at numerous concerts and festivals.

“For me, music has always been about the live experience. Nothing beats a good concert. It’s all about that one special moment between the artist and the audience – a connection that feels deeply personal. This experience is worth more than any click on a video or stream.“

It took some time for him to finally release solo music, as he had always been involved in group or band contexts. However, the release and success of his first single, Felt, gave him the confidence to continue. His fifth single, called Stiller, even made it onto Frahm’s official Piano Day playlist. In March 2024, HEMSING moved to Paris, where he is exploring new opportunities to perform live and connect with the local music scene. In the meantime, he continues his solo work. Plans for concerts and more electronic songs are becoming increasingly concrete. There is so much more to come.

HEMSING Performing

1. When and how did you realize that your whole life would be linked to music?

To be honest, I had my doubts during Covid. Being a (live) musician during a pandemic was no fun. However, after moving to Paris and seeing how things developed overall post- Covid, I am now very convinced that music will always be a part of my life.

2. Which composer has most influenced your musical imagination?

In terms of classical composers, I have to say Schubert and Beethoven (both from the early Romantic era). In jazz music, definitely Bill Evans and, more recently, Brad Mehlda As for neoclassical music, Nils Frahm and Hania Rani are my favorites.

3. What is your main creative motto?

I don’t have one myself, but I always like to refer to two quotes, which I think describe it best. The first one is from Henri Matisse: “Don’t wait for inspiration. It comes while one working.” The second one is from Leonardo da Vinci: “Simplicity is the ultimate sophistication.”

4. What would you like to express during your performance at the festival? What will your program consist of and why this choice?

I am not entirely sure yet, but I like the idea of having no pause or break between the songs. I just enjoy playing continuously, maintaining a constant and steady flow while leaving room for improvisation and ideas that arise in the moment.

5. What goals do you set for yourself, what projects do you have on the horizon?

Currently, I am working on an EP featuring minimal piano songs combined with beats. At the moment, I enjoy exploring electronic music in greater depth. Additionally, I continue to compose solo piano pieces and remain open to collaborations of all kinds.

6. How do you see the future of piano music?

The future of piano music is bright, blending classical traditions with innovative genres, digital technologies, and global influences, fostering creativity and accessibility for new generations. But I am still curious what’s next after the ”playlist generation of music“.

7. What does Paris represent for you, do you have a special relationship with this city and why did you accept the invitation to participate in the festival?

It’s a bit of a cliché, but I actually moved to Paris for love. I first visited this city as exchange student when I was 16, then I came here many times to visit my girlfriend, and now I’m trying to make it my home. And of course I see the festival as an opportunity to present myself, but also to network with the local music scene and get to know other musicians from Paris or other cities and countries. https://linktr.ee/hemsing
